Patient 1: Breast Augmentation
My Cosmetic Enhancement Story…
When I was twenty pounds heavier (and seven years younger), I loved my breasts but longed for more leanness and angularity throughout the rest of my body. Through a rigorous approach to the study and practice, and finally a certification program for the teaching of yoga which I have been cultivating for the better part of nine years, I did in fact achieve my desired image of greater physical fitness, along with a multitude of other life-enhancing benefits. Of course it was not possible for my body to retain its original breast size or voluminous capacity while shedding pounds elsewhere; thus at the age of 26, after long and careful considerations and countless hours spent wading through an endless ocean of online information, I found myself making inquiries into local plastic surgery offices of prestigious repute. On the morning of Tuesday, February 28 2006, I walked through the doors of Dr. Sanjay Grover’s beautiful Newport Beach office for my consultation appointment, and knew in an instant that I was in the best of hands.
I discussed with Dr. Grover the basic drives motivating my desire for augmentation, the specifics of my expectations concerning the results of the procedure, as well as my questions and concerns in regards to possible side-effects or complications, both short- and long-term. He provided thorough answers and analyses of all aspects of each option with the knowledgeable finesse and remarkable sensitivity that only a true master of one’s craft can possess. His entire demeanor conveyed an authentic interest in creating the perfect individualized experience for each of his patients, and so interactive was the process of mapping the architecture of my new breasts that I hardly had time to notice that the jitters had dissolved, and been replaced with can’t-hardly-contain-myself excitement for my imminent surgery date!
After the evaluation of my health history and concurrence that I was enjoying a state of general good health, I was given pre-operative instructions that included the cessation of any Vitamin-E containing products, aspirin, and alcohol. On Wednesday, March 8 2006, I had my official pre-op visit and discussion of preparatory details, and Dr. Grover and I again consulted about desired size, shape, and overall appearance. We also concluded that a small incision at the lower part of the areola, with saline implants in a sub-muscular placement, would give me the natural look and feel I desired. I went home practically floating on air and spent the next several days following all of my instructions to the letter and making my bedroom, where my recuperation would take place, into a dreamy little oasis of healing space.
THE DAY OF SURGERY
Monday, March 13 2006
I arrive at the surgery facility about an hour before my scheduled operation time to fill out paperwork for the anesthesiologist. Per my instructions, I have not had any food or water since before midnight last night. I am both tremendously excited as well as a little nervous, for I have never had surgery of any kind before. This will be my first time being put under general anesthesia, and I don’t really know what to expect. When my name is called, I hug and kiss my mother who I know will be waiting right there at the surgery center the entire time I am unconscious (which comforts me greatly), and I am escorted into a private room where I change into a robe and slippers, and tuck my hair into a little plastic cap. I weigh myself on the scale to determine my exact weight at that moment, an important bit of information for the man who will be responsible for concocting the anesthesia potion and monitoring my life functions while Dr. Grover sculpts my breasts into their new perfection. After the nurse brings me to the room where the I.V. will be administered, I am given anti-nausea medication as well as some long-lasting pain medication to keep discomfort at bay even after I wake from my operative sleep. I am now officially ready for Dr. Grover, who comes in to the room to make some markings on my breasts while I am still in a standing position. I am then comfortably settled in with warmed blankets, and somewhere in the middle of a conversation with the anesthesiologist and my O.R. nurse about what will take place next, I drift off. What feels like only moments later, I open my eyes and hazily mutter something like, “When am I going in?” (…although I doubt it was that coherent – so slurred was my speech, I am amazed anybody understood what I said at all!) The nurse just smiled and said, “Oh, you’re all done, sweetheart. You did great.” I remember very little of what followed; all I know is that my amazing mother managed to get me into the car, and swiftly home into bed, where she stayed by my side for the next several days.
THE DAY AFTER SURGERY
Tuesday, March 14 2006
What I was expecting to be painful upon the anesthesia wearing off turned out to be only a sensation of heaviness and some mild soreness. I am taking pain medication and antibiotics every six hours, drinking lots of fluids, and sleeping most of the day. I cannot get out of bed yet without assistance, so various members of my family help me up to use the restroom. I also cannot yet lift my arms, so Mom props me up with pillows and brings me food on a bed tray when I am hungry (she is even willing to feed me the first two days, bless her!) At 4:30 p.m. she drives me back to the surgery center to see Dr. Grover for my first post-operative visit, which is brief. He wants to make sure that I am doing well and that all is as it should be…which of course it is. Only one day after surgery, although swollen they are so very beautiful, and I have not a single spot of bruising. I am told to refrain from driving for at least another week. I am also to begin the gentle massaging of my breasts to avoid the build-up of any scar tissue and to prevent capsular contracture, which can cause a hardening of the breasts.
THREE DAYS AFTER SURGERY
Thursday, March 16 2006
Today is my twenty-seventh birthday! While still taking it easy, I feel well enough to cheerfully entertain the friends who stop by and to actually eat dinner with my family downstairs at the dinner table. I continue to feel soreness and tenderness, but the heavy feeling has dissipated. I have resumed the use of my laptop, but refrain from lifting anything that weighs more than several pounds.
NINE DAYS AFTER SURGERY
Wednesday, March 22 2006
Today I have another post-op follow-up visit with Dr. Grover, who removes my sutures and replaces the surgical tape over the incision area, which is healing beautifully. His work is so remarkably precise, I can already tell that in a few months it will be as though the scar was never even there.
TWO WEEKS AFTER SURGERY
Monday, March 27 2006
I have resumed my driving privileges, although I exercise tremendous caution when operating a vehicle. I drive slowly and turn the wheel with care, not wanting to place any unnecessary strain on the muscles which are still healing. After so many years of sleeping on my stomach, I am finally accustomed to the concept of sleeping on my back, an obvious necessity now. Missing my yoga practice, I begin a daily walk with my sister just so that I am not sedentary. Dr. Grover knows that as I am an advanced yoga practitioner, most of the postures that I would regularly perform in my pre-surgery days are still many weeks away from being considered safe. Alas, no arm balancing asanas (Sanskrit for “pose”), inversions, or full backbends (which is exactly as I expected the case to be)… such a small price to pay for my gorgeous new breasts, which are absolutely perfect on my petite frame.
ONE MONTH AFTER SURGERY
Monday, April 10 2006
I am happy to report that, in my decision to go forward with Dr. Sanjay Grover as my plastic surgeon my conclusions do in fact support my hypotheses about being “in the best of hands.” I could not possibly have asked for a more positive, nurturing cosmetic enhancement experience and it is my hope that every woman out there seeking to invest in herself can also have the good fortune that I have had with my procedure. I can say without an ounce of hesitation that this is by far one of the best choices I have ever made in all my life. My follow-up care continues to be regular and thorough, as Dr. Grover makes it a priority to monitor his patients’ progress closely, especially throughout that crucial first year of complete healing.
In the spirit of the yoga tradition…
Namaste.

Dr. Grover has such a soothing, unobtrusive persona that I immediately felt comfortable during my very first consultation and each one after that. I had many questions swirling around in my head. He covered the tummy tuck technique so completely. His knowledge is impeccable. He is patient. He is thorough. He is a gem in the field of Plastic Surgeons.
Four weeks have passed since my abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) and my stomach is unbelievably beautiful and flat. An added bonus, no stretch marks! At age 68, the results are more than I could have imagined. The contour of my body was given back to me along with a new surge of self confidence. The doctor’s integrity and skillful hands are a winning combination. Dr. Grover exudes care, kindness and compassion. I am absolutely pleased beyond words to have him as my Plastic Surgeon.
Thank you so very much Dr. Grover.
