Ask Doctor Grover - Clitoral Hood Reduction with Labiaplasty

Clitoral hood reduction may be performed along with labiaplasty. Clitoral hood reduction is performed usually for cosmetic reasons to reduce the amount or appearance of tissue that cover the clitoris. Some feel that clitoral hood reduction may benefit one’s sexual experience.

Ask Doctor Grover - Risks involved in Labiaplasty

As with any surgical procedures, there are several risks that one must be willing to undertake. Although small, there is a potential risk for bleeding or infection. It is important to avoid aspirin and other anti inflammatories for 10 days prior to surgery. Perioperative antibiotics and good hygiene will diminish one’s risk for infection. Pain or discomfort is present, although not significant with a wedge technique. Wound separation is possible. Avoid intercourse for 6-8 weeks post operatively.

Ask Doctor Grover - Will I Lose Weight from a Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Tummy Tucks are ideal for the post partum woman who has excess or lax skin, excess fat, and lax or separated muscles. Additionally, tummy tucks will benefit those patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and are now left with loose extra skin. An abdominoplasty can do wonders to improve or contour a person’s body, but does not generally result in significant weight loss. Some may notice a weight loss of 3 to 10 pounds.

Ask Doctor Grover - Compression Garments After Tummy Tuck Surgery - How Long?

Most plastic surgeons will have their tummy tuck patients wear some form of abdominal binder or compression garment for the first 3-6 weeks following a tummy tuck. Many patients will express that they feel more comfortable and confident with it on during the first month or so. Some patients can’t get wait to get rid of it though.

Ask Doctor Grover - Fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm are best to plump lips

Fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane are best to plump lips as they are fillers.  Botox, on the other hand, effects the nerve impulses to muscles that create lines or wrinkles (dynamic rhytids).  Having said this, I have on occasion injected Botox around the lips for “smoker’s lines” and patients have felt that it also helped them achieve a fuller lip by effecting the way the lip roll is.

Orange County Plastic Surgeon Q & A

Ask Doctor Grover - Botox price should be determined by the unit

It is best to pay for your Botox by the ‘unit’.  Each vial of Botox contains 100 units.  Every physician may dilute their Botox differently, thus, the best way to compare ‘apples to apples’ is by knowing the price of one ‘unit’ of Botox.

Most patients who are good candidates for Botox can benefit from 10-20 units in each ‘area’ (glabella, forehead, crow’s feet).

However, there are many other areas of the face that may benefit from smaller amounts of Botox such as “smoker’s lines”, corner’s of the mouth, neck bands, dynamic (mobile) nose tip etc.

Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon Q & A

Ask Doctor Grover - Effects of Botox varies from patient to patient

On average, most patients will notice that they will see a return of ‘dynamic’ wrinkles (those created from muscle contraction) by three months after injections of Botox.

Some patients do not want to see any movement or appearance of any wrinkles and may feel that Botox only lasts them 2-3 months, while other patients may say that their Botox lasted them 6-9 months, but upon examination you see a fair amount of movement.

In general, this is not dependent on age. You may find someone in their late 20’s or early 30s with very animated wrinkles that are quite apparent with only little muscle contraction, while you may see a 60-year-old patient with few dynamic wrinkles.

Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon Q & A

Ask Doctor Grover - Waiting for Labiaplasty until after childbirth.

There is no medical reason that should stop you from having a labiaplasty performed further childbirth; however, you may wish to defer your surgery until afterwards, so that you do not feel that you need to have this done a second time.

However, since you had a C-section, there is a good possibility that you may have another C-section and then there is less chance of having significant changes following repeat pregnancy. Regarding your discomfort with intercourse, this may be improved with labiaplasty, but there can be other factors contributing to this.

Orange County Plastic Surgeon Q & A

Ask Doctor Grover - Labiaplasty is more popular than ever.

Labiaplasty procedures have gained significant popularity over the past 5 years due to changes in fashion and grooming as well as due to further education and media exposure. With grooming trends limiting amount of genital hair, a woman’s long or asymmetric labia (or inner lips) are more apparent. Some women choose to undergo labiaplasty strictly due to cosmetic reasons. Others may have functional problems or pain with clothing or intercourse.
