Dr. Grover Tummy Tuck Procedures

December 16th, 2009

Recently, the tummy tuck procedure has emerged as one of the optimal methods for reducing excess body fat and restoring ones shape and figure. Also known as Abdominoplasty, the Tummy Tuck is a surgical procedure that dramatically reduces the appearance of a protruding abdomen. Through the procedure, the tummy tuck serves to remove excess fat and skin, and tighten the muscles of your abdomen, making a more flat abdomen. This plastic surgery procedure can take anywhere from 2-5 hours, while most patients are back to work within 3-4 weeks.

Ask Doctor Grover – How long should I wear my binder garment?

Most patients will wear some compression for 4-6 weeks following a tummy tuck. Initially, they will wear the abdominal binder provided for the first week or so. Once the drains are removed, we will have our patients switch to a girdle or ‘barely there’ type of garment.

Ask Doctor Grover – Are binders necessary after Tummy Tuck surgery?

The use of abdominal binders following an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is very common. It serves several purposes.

The first purpose is that it will help provide additional comfort to the patient following surgery. Second, it will provide a small degree of compression to the abdominal skin flap to help minimize swelling and limit fluid accumulation.

It is true, however, as with many things, too much of something can cause problems.  If someone wears an adominal binder much too tightly, this could compromise the blood supply to the overlying skin.

Ask Doctor Grover – Who is a good candidate for a mini tummy tuck?

I find that very few women are good candidates for mini abdominoplasties. Most women ask about a ‘mini tummy tuck’ because they want a smaller procedure with a smaller scar. However, what most women do not realize is that usually a mini tummy tuck will only address a small amount of skin on the lower abdomen, and usually will only tighten the lower abdominal muscles.

If you are concerned about excess skin on the upper abdomen, especially when you sit down, then you will likely be unhappy with a mini tummy tuck. Additionally, if you tighten the lower abdominal muscles on someone who has laxity throughout or a diastasis rectus, this will exaggerate the fullness in the upper abdomen.

Other options do exist, such as endoscopic techniques to tighten the muscles throughout with only a small incision down low and one around the umbilicus.

Ask Doctor Grover – Will I Lose Weight from a Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Tummy Tucks are ideal for the post partum woman who has excess or lax skin, excess fat, and lax or separated muscles. Additionally, tummy tucks will benefit those patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and are now left with loose extra skin. An abdominoplasty can do wonders to improve or contour a person’s body, but does not generally result in significant weight loss. Some may notice a weight loss of 3 to 10 pounds.

Ask Doctor Grover – Compression Garments After Tummy Tuck Surgery – How Long?

Most plastic surgeons will have their tummy tuck patients wear some form of abdominal binder or compression garment for the first 3-6 weeks following a tummy tuck. Many patients will express that they feel more comfortable and confident with it on during the first month or so. Some patients can’t get wait to get rid of it though.

Ask Doctor Grover – Who is a candidate for Abdominoplasty?

Generally speaking, most patients who come in for a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) have had children before.  They may have excess fatty tissue, excess or loose skin, and possibly loose abdominal muscles or separation (diastasis recti) with or without stretch marks.  Adominoplasty will address all of these issues.

Some women are fortunate enough to retain a tight abdominal core following childbirth and may retain good elasticity and thus only require liposuction.

Have your plastic surgeon evaluate your abdomen to let you know your options.

Ask Doctor Grover – Centering the Belly Button After Tummy Tuck Surgery

It is interesting to see that many women actually have a belly button which is off center prior to a tummy tuck.  Many women don’t realize this.  In fact, I point this out to all of my tummy tuck patients because I am not always able to give a patient a perfectly centered belly button depending on the length of their umbilical stalk.  Yes, there are ways to “correct” this and make the belly button more centered after the fact.  I would consult with your plastic surgeon or another to see if you are a candidate.
