Orange County Plastic Surgeon Q & A

Ask Doctor Grover – Can the effects of Liposuction cause cellulite?

Liposuction does not cause cellulite, nor does it treat it.  In some instances, liposuction could make cellulite appear a bit worse as it may leave the skin looking a bit more ‘loose’ if there is poor elasticity.  Newer technologies, such as VelaShape are FDA approved devices using radio frequency, deep suction massage and infrared laser to help improve the appearance of cellulite.

Ask Doctor Grover – Who is right for Tummy Tuck surgery?

Generally speaking, most patients who come in for a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) have had children before.  They may have excess fatty tissue, excess or loose skin, and possibly loose abdominal muscles or separation (diastasis recti) with or without stretch marks.  Adominoplasty will address all of these issues.

Some women are fortunate enough to retain a tight abdominal core following childbirth and may retain good elasticity and thus only require liposuction.

Have your plastic surgeon evaluate your abdomen to let you know your options.

Ask Doctor Grover – Can Liposuction and Tummy Tuck be performed at the same time?

Liposuction may be combined with an abdominoplasty many times. Some times this is only performed on the flanks, other times, some surgeons will perform liposcution on the front of the abdomen as well. There are different forms of liposuction available such as Power Assisted Liposuction, Vaser ultrasonic liposuction, and traditional hand assisted liposuction. All of these techniques are viable options in the right hands.

Ask Doctor Grover – Hole in belly button normal?

Having a small separation around the new umbilicus (belly button) can occur.  It can occur as there is diminished blood supply in this area following abdominoplasty as well as too much tension.  This type of wound will usually heal on it’s own but wet to dry dressing changes with normal saline solution will help clean it up and stimulate some granulation tissue.  Revision is usually not necessary.
Check with your plastic surgeon.

Ask Doctor Grover – Achieve desired weight before Abdominoplasty

There is no correct answer to this. Liposuction is ideal for the patient who has achieved a stable weight with a balanced level of diet and exercise. Liposuction is ideal to contour certain areas of excess fatty deposits. It is not appropriate to try to remove every single fat cell with Liposuction as this will give an undesired result.

Ask Doctor Grover – Can Lymphatic Massage Help My Liposuction Results?

It seems as though you have developed some swelling following your procedure. This is quite normal, especially in the flanks. Lymphatic massage or deep tissue massage should greatly help you. You would be best advised to discuss your concerns with your surgeon as they can best guide you.

Ask Doctor Grover – Searching for a Qualified Liposuction Surgeon

You should seek a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your liposuction procedure.  A nice place to start is at www.surgery.org, the website for The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  During your consultation, ask your surgeon about their training, experience, experience with different modalities,  type of anesthesia, operating room facility and staff, their safety record and precautions taken, etc.

Ask Doctor Grover – Liposuction and SmartLipo

Many new trends exist for liposuction. Ultimately, you can get wonderful results with any technique, but be careful, because you can also get less than satisfactory results with any technique. Firstly, I would submit to you to try and seek liposuction with a Board Certified plastic surgeon, certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery.  A good place to start is at surgery.org, the website for The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.  Ask your surgeon if they feel they perform their liposuction with smart lipo/laser assistance only or do they also employ some form of ‘true’ liposuction along with it to aspirate the fat.  Some surgeons will first perform some form of traditional liposuction first and then introduce the smart lipo probe under the skin to try and heat up the skin to try and get better skin contraction.  The jury is still out….but being investigated.

Ask Doctor Grover – Liposuction Post-Pregnancy

You should not determine which procedure you will have because of the cost. If you are going to proceed with plastic surgery to enhance your aesthetic appearance and confidence, you should have the correct procedure done, whatever that may be. Many women following childbirth will benefit from an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) to get rid of excess skin and fatty tissue and to reconstruct the loose abdominal wall muscles.

Having said this, there is the rare woman who will have excellent skin elasticity and good muscle tone following childbirth and they may be an ideal candidate for Liposuction. Good luck.
