Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon Q & A

Ask Doctor Grover – Is Nipple Reduction Surgery also for men?

Nipple reduction is not an uncommon request. Although I perform many more breast procedures on females, it is interesting that I find that more males request ‘nipple reduction’. This procedure is often performed differently for males and females. I find that most males prefer their nipples to be as small or least protruding as possible. This procedure is performed under local anesthetic in about one-half an hour.

Ask Doctor Grover – Is the nipple ever removed during breast enhancement surgery?

The nipple/areolar complex is rarely ‘removed’ during breast reduction or lift. With current techniques for breast reduction and lift, the nipple areolar complex is kept attached to the underlying breast tissue to provide blood supply. The surrounding skin is removed and tailored. Rarely would a ‘free’ nipple graft be performed, perhaps in a very large, pendulous reduction or in a situation where the blood supply is compromised.

Ask Doctor Grover – Areolar reduction isn’t for everybody

Areolar reduction is a nice procedure for the right patient with the right type of breasts.  Most breast reductions and breast lifts are performed along with an areolar reduction as part of the procedure.  Areolar reduction, by itself, is requested on occasion, and does also produce a tightening and lifting effect to ones breasts.

An isolated areolar reduction can be performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia.  It will take most surgeons between one or two hours.  It is not appropriate for some patients and usually is best after childbearing is complete.
