Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon Q & A

Ask Doctor Grover – Do some Doctor’s prefer Restylane over Juvederm?

Juvederm and Restylane are a type of substance known as hyaluronic acid (HA). They are very nice dermal fillers as they can be soft and last a while, but not too long. Remember, you will continue to age and your face will undergo changes. It is nice to not have a product that may be permanent and not ‘age’ appropriately with your face. A very important factor to achieve a nice result with a filler is, of course, your injector.

Ask Doctor Grover – How much bruising can I expect from Restylane?

Whenever you inject the skin with any product that requires a needle, there is a risk of a bruise.  This can occur with Botox, Restylane or Juvederm.  Having said this, usually there is no bruising or very little.  It will help you if you avoid non steroidal anti inflammatories such as Advil, Ibuprofen or even aspirin for a week prior.

Botox Works Well – Used in the right spots

Too much Botox or even a little in the wrong place can cause your eyebrows to droop.

As you know, there are muscles that work to lift the brow (the frontalis muscle in your forehead) and muscles that can pull down the brow (the orbicularis muscle around your eyes).  They work in balance.

One can achieve a nice ‘chemical browlift’ by injecting appropriate amounts in the right spots.

However, if you have a tendancy towards too droopy of a brow or too much excess skin, Botox will not help and you would benefit from a blepharoplasty or browlift.

Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon Dr. Sanjay Grover – Photo Facial Treatments

Be aware that there are many different laser companies that offer FotoFacial or photofacial treatments.  FotoFacials, or intense pulse light treatments are effective for pigmentation and telangiectasias or broken capillaries.  If your IPL laser also uses radiofrequency, then you may notice some smoothing of the skin as well.  You should have a consultation with a plastic surgeon to evaluate your skin type to determine how long between treatments.  If you are lighter skinned and not tanning, you can generally have a treatment every 3-4 weeks.  However, seek a personalized consultation.

Ask Doctor Grover – Cost of Dermabrasion?

Prices for all cosmetic procedures will vary from surgeon to surgeon. This is the case with dermabrasion. There is no set price schedule that plastic surgeons use. Each plastic surgeon may feel that a specific procedure is more ideally suited for one patient versus another in the same area.

I recommend you consult with several board certified plastic surgeons to find one you are comfortable with. You may benefit from different laser treatments instead of dermabrasion.

Non-surgical Face Lift Possible for Patients in Newport Beach

A non surgical facelift generally refers to fillers, Botox, and certain laser procedures. These treatments are ideal alone for patients who do not require a facelift. Facelifts will help address excess lax skin and underlying tissues. Some patients who undergo facelifts will also benefit from these treatments such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Botox.

Ask Doctor Grover – Can Botox Reduce My Forehead Wrinkles?

Botox works very nicely for ‘dynamic’ wrinkles which occur due to forehead muscle contraction.  It will also prevent future wrinkles from developing.  Botox, however, does not eliminate wrinkles that are already etched in although it may soften them.  For these ‘static’ or permanent wrinkles you can consider other options such as ablative or non-ablative laser resurfacing.  These laser procedures, however, will work best if combined with Botox otherwise the wrinkles will return fairly quickly.

How Long Until I Notice My Botox Results?

Most patients begin to notice a result within 2-3 days following injection of Botox.  Patients may require 7 days to notice their ‘final’ result.  If you do not notice an effect or your desired result after 7 days, it is a good idea to see your physician who did your treatment.  You may require additional units of Botox to see the desired effect.
