Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon – Q & A

October 16th, 2009

Ask Doctor Grover – Is cellulite caused by liposuction?

Liposuction does not cause cellulite, nor does it treat it.  In some instances, liposuction could make cellulite appear a bit worse as it may leave the skin looking a bit more ‘loose’ if there is poor elasticity.  Newer technologies, such as VelaShape are FDA approved devices using radiofrequency, deep suction massage and infrared laser to help improve the appearance of cellulite.

Ask Doctor Grover – How can I get six-pack abs?

One can achieve ‘six pack’ abs on their own if they are able to get their body fat content low enough. Some patients, however, require some assistance with liposuction. Etching can be performed, but can also leave unacceptable depressions and scarring.

Ask Doctor Grover – Is swelling and lumps after Liposuction procedure normal?

It seems as though you have developed some swelling following your procedure. This is quite normal, especially in the flanks. Lympatic massage or deep tissue massage should greatly help you. You would be best advised to discuss your concerns with your surgeon as they can best guide you.

Ask Doctor Grover – Who is right for Tummy Tuck surgery?

Generally speaking, most patients who come in for a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) have had children before.  They may have excess fatty tissue, excess or loose skin, and possibly loose abdominal muscles or separation (diastasis recti) with or without stretch marks.  Adominoplasty will address all of these issues.

Some women are fortunate enough to retain a tight abdominal core following childbirth and may retain good elasticity and thus only require liposuction.

Have your plastic surgeon evaluate your abdomen to let you know your options.

Ask Doctor Grover – What is the difference between modes of Liposuction?

Liposuction may be combined with an abdominoplasty many times. Some times this is only performed on the flanks, other times, some surgeons will perform liposucution on the front of the abdomen as well. There are different forms of liposuction available such as Power Assisted Liposuction, Vaser ultrasonic liposuction, and traditional hand assisted liposuction. All of these techniques are viable options in the right hands.

Ask Doctor Grover – Liposuction or Abdominoplasty

The fact that you are considering having a child in 2-5 years should not dissuade you from having liposuction at this time. The main consideration as to whether you should have liposuction or not is whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. Firstly, you should be healthy. Secondly, do you have localized areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise? Thirdly, do you have good skin elasticity? If so, then you are an excellent candidate. Properly performed liposuction should have no adverse affect on your ability to have a healthy pregnancy or put you at an increased risk for stretch marks.

Ask Doctor Grover – Achieve desired weight before Abdominoplasty

There is no correct answer to this. Liposuction is ideal for the patient who has achieved a stable weight with a balanced level of diet and exercise. Liposuction is ideal to contour certain areas of excess fatty deposits. It is not appropriate to try to remove every single fat cell with Liposuction as this will give an undesired result.
