Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon Q & A

July 17th, 2009

Ask Doctor Grover   – Different Surgical Options

Patients suffering from gynecomastia or male breast enlargement can be treated with several different surgical modalities.  These include:

  • Liposuction only (preferably power-assisted liposuction)
  • Liposuction along with surgical excision
  • Excision of the glandular tissue (subcutaneous mastectomy) only.

Surgical excision can be performed using semicircular incisions along the lower border of the areola or small ‘stab’ incisions along the areola.  The appropriate method chosen will depend on the underlying problem.

Newport Beach Gynecomastia Surgery with Dr. Sanjay Grover

Gynecomastia surgery may involve liposuction and/or excision. Many patients who present with concerns of gynecomastia or enlarged male breasts benefit from some form of liposuction. I prefer power assisted liposuction, but ultrasonic liposuction is another good option. Some patients, however, have some very firm, glandular tissue that will require excision with an incision made on the underside of the areola.

Gynecomastia Surgery Newport Beach

April 16th, 2009

Male Breast Reduction surgery is a surgical procedure that can include liposuction, excision or a combination of both.  The decision for
liposuction or excision is made after a surgeon determines the best course of treatment, depending on the specific conditions of the patient. Some gynecomastia patients present with very little glandular tissue, but have an excess of body fat accumulated in the breast area.  This
condition can be treated with liposuction only.  If the enlarged breast area consists of mostly glandular tissues, excision is the
recommended course of treatment.  Typically, patients will present with a combination of both fatty and glandular enlargement, which requires
both liposuction and excision.  Either way, treatment for gynecomastia is effective and long-lasting, which makes it a very treatable
condition under most circumstances.

Newport Beach Male Breast Reduction

April 15th, 2009

Gynecomastia, or Male Breast Enlargement effects between 40 – 90 percent of teenage males, according to the National Institutes of Health.  The condition usually resolves itself naturally by the age of 20, however, 10 percent of men who suffer from enlarged breasts as teenagers continue to suffer after age 20.  The condition can cause emotional stress and anxiety for men, which can lead to feelings of humiliation and shame related to body and self image.

Male Breast Reduction surgery for the correction of gynecomastia is a long-term solution that surgically reduces glandular and excess fatty deposits in the breasts either through liposuction, excision or a combination of both.  Depending on the specific condition of the patient
and the amount of correction needed, male breast reduction surgery can be performed with minimal bruising and discomfort, allowing for a
quick recovery and resumption of everyday activity.
