Newport Beach Plastic Surgery – Q & A

October 7th, 2009

Ask Doctor Grover – Can I get a breast reduction and lift at the same time?  Are they the same thing?

Most breast reductions will lift the breasts as well. There are rare instances when a breast reduction will be performed with liposcuction alone. Liposuction would rarely ‘lift’ the breast unless there is fantastic elasticity. Many breast reduction techniques will utilize the same incisions used for a breast lift with or without a breast implant.

Ask Doctor Grover – How much does Breast Reduction surgery cost?

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, may sometimes be covered by one’s health insurance plan. Having said this, many plastic surgeons do not participate with insurance plans. Insurance companies require patients to meet certain guidelines to qualify for a breast reduction. They will require that the patient meets certain height and weight requirements and also require that a certain weight of breast tissue is removed from  each breast prior to paying for any procedures.

Ask Doctor Grover – Nipple Reduction Surgery in Newport Beach

Areolar reduction is a nice procedure for the right patient with the right type of breasts.  Most breast reductions and breast lifts are performed along with an areolar reduction as part of the procedure.  Areolar reduction, by itself, is requested on occasion, and does also produce a tightening and lifting effect to ones breasts.

An isolated areolar reduction can be performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia.  It will take most surgeons between one or two hours.  It is not appropriate for some patients and usually is best after childbearing is complete.

Ask Doctor Grover – Reducing Breast Implants Size: How Long Should I Wait?

You can change your implants at any time; however, this may not be the wisest thing to do early on. Generally speaking, you should avoid re-operation in the first 3 months unless there is an emergency that is ‘forcing’ you to do so. Your breast will evolve over the first 3-4 months and you will start getting ‘used to’ your new breasts. You likely had a detailed conversation with your plastic surgeon prior to undergoing this procedure and jointly decided on the size you were going for. Correct?

Give it some time. You may be very glad you did not rush into something too hastily. It does not have to do with bleeding.

Ask Doctor Grover – Orange County Breast Lift with Breast Implants Post Pregnancy

A lift will help your droopy breasts but will require some scars. You may or may not require an implant as well depending on the quality and quantity of your breast tissue. With a breast lift, your own breast tissue can be restructured to give the appearance of a fuller breast. The extent of scars for a mastopexy will depend on the extent of droopiness and the quality of your skin.

Ask Doctor Grover – Newport Beach Breast Reduction

Most breast reductions are performed as outpatient procedures. Pain is usually limited following a breast reduction and well controlled with oral pain medications. There may be rare instances when a patient’s medical condition warrants an overnight hospitalization following breast reduction.

Ask Doctor Grover – Detect A Silicone Breast Implant Rupture Early with MRI

Many women, especially with older generations of silicone implants may have had ‘silent ruptures’.  Some data suggest that with older generations of silicone implants that there were 50% silent ruptures after 10 years based on MRI studies.  With current Mentor Memory Gel implants, there is a 1.1% rupture rate after 6 years for first time breast augmentation patients based on their 6-year ‘core’ data, and a 3.8% rupture rate for first time reconstructive patients.  The best way to detect a rupture would be with an MRI as this can detect 99% of ruptures.

The FDA has recommended women with silicone implants consider having an MRI every 3 and then 2 years following augmentation.  This may be a bit extreme.  Check with your plastic surgeon to find out their recommendations.  Mammograms can also detect approximately 85% of ruptures and ultrasound can detect approximately 90-95% of ruptures depending on the type of ultrasound used.
