Silicone Implants Approved 2 Years Ago This Week!

October 28th, 2008

It was two years ago this week that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lifted the fourteen year ban on the use of silicone breast implants for breast augmentation surgery.Since 1962, silicone breast implants have been the doctor’s choice for breast implant surgery. But in 1992, the FDA put a ban on silicone implants amid allegations that ruptures in the sac in which the silicone is contained were more prevalent and dangerous than were first thought. After fourteen years of case studies and research into any link between silicone ruptures and autoimmune diseases, most studies find “no association between silicone breast implants and those type of diseases,” says Mayo Clinic epidemiologist Dr. Sherine Gabriel. “So the scientific evidence on this point has been negative and quite consistent.”

The removal of this ban has been beneficial for doctors and patients, who generally regard silicone implants as better feeling and better looking. Dr. Scott Spear, head of plastic surgery at Georgetown University Hospital and consultant for Allegan, maker of silicone implant devices says “it’s a hugely positive piece of news for plastic surgeons and patients because it really allows us to turn a page and to work with what we have believed for a long time is a better technology.”

More and more women today are choosing breast augmentation surgery – 345,500 women in 2007 – and a majority of them are choosing silicone implants. There is more information available today in regards to the risks and benefits associated with silicone, which empowers potential patients with more options and the ability to make more informed decisions.
