Mastopexy (Breast Lift) Information

March 12th, 2008

Mastopexy, or a breast lift, is a surgical procedure to uplift and reshape a sagging, droopy, ptotic breast. Changes in a women’s breast over time can be a result from pregnancy, breast-feeding, weight loss, aging or heredity. In addition to a sagging, droopy look, the breast nipples will often point down loosing that youthful, natural appearance.

A breast lift can be performed with or without a saline breast implant or a silicone breast implant if one desires additional volume to enhance the size and shape. Many different techniques can be used to perform a breast lift. If one only has a slightly droopy or ptotic breast, a breast implant may be all that one needs to give them a much fuller, perkier look. However, if one has more of a sagging breast, then more incisions and thus scars will be required. A breast lift may rarely require only a “crescent” shaped approach on the top of the areola. This technique is infrequently used by Dr. Grover. Many times one may only require incisions and scars around the entire areola (circumareolar approach) or may require incisions and scars like the shape of a “lollipop” with a “vertical technique”. In some cases, if one has excessive loose skin, an “anchor scar” approach may be required. Both the “vertical” and the “anchor scar” technique allow for more reshaping on one’s breast. The size of the areola will be reduced with this procedure.
