Ask Doctor Grover – Tummy Tuck good for losing weight after pregnancy?

Tummy Tucks are ideal for the post-partum woman who has excess or lax skin, excess fat, and lax or separated muscles. Additionally, tummy tucks will benefit those patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and are now left with loose extra skin. An abdominoplasty can do wonders to improve or contour a person’s body, but does not generally result in significant weight loss. Some may notice a weight loss of 3 to 10 pounds.

Ask Doctor Grover – Who is a good candidate for a mini tummy tuck?

I find that very few women are good candidates for mini abdominoplasties. Most women ask about a ‘mini tummy tuck’ because they want a smaller procedure with a smaller scar. However, what most women do not realize is that usually a mini tummy tuck will only address a small amount of skin on the lower abdomen, and usually will only tighten the lower abdominal muscles.

If you are concerned about excess skin on the upper abdomen, especially when you sit down, then you will likely be unhappy with a mini tummy tuck. Additionally, if you tighten the lower abdominal muscles on someone who has laxity throughout or a diastasis rectus, this will exaggerate the fullness in the upper abdomen.

Other options do exist, such as endoscopic techniques to tighten the muscles throughout with only a small incision down low and one around the umbilicus.

Ask Doctor Grover – What is a mid-face lift?  Is it the same as a cheek lift?

A mid-face lift, also known as a ‘cheek lift,’ blends the lower lid/cheek junction. It differs from a lower facelift or facelift, which addresses the lower two-thirds of the face. There are several different techniques that plastic surgeons utilize to address the midface, including techniques through the lower eyelid in both the subperiosteal and suborbicularis planes.

Other techniques can approach the midface from the temporal approach in the hair and from the mouth. Others will address the midface during a facelift. Many options exist, and every surgeon will have their preferred techniques.

Ask Doctor Grover – Surgical options for gynecomastia

Patients suffering from gynecomastia or male breast enlargement can be treated with several different surgical modalities.  These include:

  • Liposuction only (preferably power-assisted liposuction)
  • Liposuction along with surgical excision
  • Excision of the glandular tissue (subcutaneous mastectomy) only.

Surgical excision can be performed using semicircular incisions along the lower border of the areola or small ‘stab’ incisions along the areola.  The appropriate method chosen will depend on the underlying problem.

Ask Doctor Grover – Gynecomastia just liposuction?

Gynecomastia surgery may involve liposuction and/or excision. Many patients who present with concerns of gynecomastia or enlarged male breasts benefit from some form of liposuction. I prefer power assisted liposuction, but ultrasonic liposuction is another good option. Some patients, however, have some very firm, glandular tissue that will require excision with an incision made on the underside of the areola.

Ask Doctor Grover – Getting Rid of Pregnancy Fat

You should not determine which procedure you will have because of the cost. If you are going to proceed with plastic surgery to enhance your aesthetic appearance and confidence, you should have the correct procedure done, whatever that may be. Many women following childbirth will benefit from an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) to get rid of excess skin and fatty tissue and to reconstruct the loose abdominal wall muscles.

Having said this, there is the rare woman who will have excellent skin elasticity and good muscle tone following childbirth and they may be an ideal candidate for Liposuction. Good luck.

Ask Doctor Grover – Tummy Tuck Cost

As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, costs can vary based on a number of factors.  Some of these factors can include:

1) Whether your surgeon is a board certified plastic surgeon or another type of surgeon;

2) The experience of your surgeon;

3) The results obtained by your surgeon;

4) Whether your procedure is performed in an accredited outpatient surgery center or hospital;

5) Whether you are using a board-certified anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist to perform your anesthesia; and

6) Whether or not there is liposuction performed along with your tummy tuck, etc.

Some surgeons may perform your tummy tuck in 2 hours, others may spend 4 hours.  Some may ‘tighten’ the muscles with one layer of sutures, others may use several.  As you can see, there are many factors.

You may find that typical surgeons fees for an abdominoplasty will range from $6000-$12000 without O.R. and anesthesia fees.

A nice place to find a plastic surgeon who is focused on aesthetic plastic surgery is www.surgery.org, the website of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Ask Doctor Grover  – Minimizing Bruising after Rhinoplasty

There are many factors involved to minimize bruising, some of which you have control of.  First of all, as the surgeon, it helps to use a gentle touch and to minimize disruption of the periosteum or lining that covers the bone. Avoid aspirin and other non steroidal anti inflammatories such as advil, alleve and ibuprofen for 10 days prior to surgery. Also, avoid Vitamin E, fish oil, Echinacea, AirBorne etc.  Take arnica montana several days prior to and following your surgery. Additionally, plenty of icing is important post operatively.

Ask Doctor Grover – What is tip rhinoplasty?

Tip rhinoplasty is desired by some patients. These patients generally require work only on the tip. They may have a nice width to the upper two thirds of the nose with a nice profile already. Usually patients will larger, bulbous or boxy nasal tips will benefit from tip work for more refinement. This is carried out well with an open rhinoplasty for many but not all. On occasion, a cartilage tip graft may be desirable.
