Ask Doctor Grover – Preparing For Your Consultation

You should seek a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your liposuction procedure.  A nice place to start is at www.surgery.org, the website for The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  During your consultation, ask your surgeon about their training, experience, experience with different modalities,  type of anesthesia, operating room facility and staff, their safety record and precautions taken, etc.

Ask Doctor Grover – Liposuction and Tummy Tuck are Options Post-childbirth

You should not determine which procedure you will have because of the cost. If you are going to proceed with plastic surgery to enhance your aesthetic appearance and confidence, you should have the correct procedure done, whatever that may be. Many women following childbirth will benefit from an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) to get rid of excess skin and fatty tissue and to reconstruct the loose abdominal wall muscles.

Having said this, there is the rare woman who will have excellent skin elasticity and good muscle tone following childbirth and they may be an ideal candidate for Liposuction. Good luck.

Liposuction Combined with Tummy Tuck Provides Great Results

Liposuction may be combined with an abdominoplasty many times. Some times this is only performed on the flanks, other times, some surgeons will perform liposcution on the front of the abdomen as well. There are different forms of liposuction available such as Power Assisted Liposuction, Vaser ultrasonic liposuction, and traditional hand assisted liposuction. All of these techniques are viable options in the right hands.

Ask Doctor Grover – Will I get used to my butt implants?

Most of my buttock augmentation patients feel they are part of them. As with breast implants, patients tend to feel that implants are incorporated into their body and self image and do not think about them. Some of the buttock implants used now are softer than previously used. It also helps if you have a decent amount of padding or fatty tissue to cover the implants.

Methods for Buttock Augmentation

Two methods for buttock augmentation include:

1) Fat grafting using your own fat cells; and

2) Buttock augmentation using silicone implants

Patients with adequate donor fatty tissue elsewhere on the body may be a candidate for fat transfers. However, many patients who desire buttock augmentation do not have much excess fatty tissue and must rely on a silicone implant to achieve an augmented or fuller buttocks.

Ask Doctor Grover – Breast Implants Surgery Cause Stretch Marks?

Although most patients who undergo breast augmentation do not experience any stretch marks or striae, some can.  A person usually develops stretch marks or tears in the dermis during periods of rapid growth in the presence of high circulating hormontes (steroids), for example, during puberty or pregnancy.  If one’s skin envelope is quite tight and desires a large augmentation, this type of patient could potentially suffer from some stretch marks, depending on their genetics.  These stretch marks initially are red in nature but whiten with time.  Usually post partum women with stretch marks find that breast implants improve the appearance of their stretch marks.

Swelling and Tightness After Breast Implants Surgery

Some swelling and tightness following breast augmentation is not uncommon. This will depend on how tight the skin envelope is prior to augmentation, whether the implant is on top of the muscle, completely under the muscle, or partially under the muscle and the size of the implants used and your chest wall dimensions.

It may several weeks before you feel more relaxed and may be two to three months before the implants feel completely ‘settled’.  Having said this, some patients have very soft breasts one week following surgery.

Ask Doctor Grover – Is there an industry standard of when I should replace my implants?

It is impossible to tell someone exactly how long their implants may last.  It is possible that it could be for a lifetime. However, I tell my patients that they should not have breast implants placed unless they are open to having another surgery some time in their lifespan. Patients do need to understand that breast implants can ‘fail’, i.e., a saline implant can deflate and a silicone implant can ‘rupture’.

One will readily notice if their saline implant is deflating as their breast will become smaller withing a few hours to few days. Ruptured silicone implants may cause some sort of physical deformity or hardening of the breast; however, many times the rupture is considered ‘silent’ as their is no visible evidence of a rupture. MRIs are the best way to detect a ruptured silicone implant, however, ultrasounds or mammograms may also detect ruptured silicone implants to a lesser degree.

Ask Doctor Grover – Implants Don’t ‘Fall Out’ of their pocket

Patients may sometimes incorrectly feel that their implants have ‘fallen out’ of their pocket. The implants do not have anywhere else to go. When patients describe this, they are usually affected by an overly large pocket which may allow the implant to move outwards towards the underarm. This can often be corrected with internal sutures or a lateral capsulorraphy.

Ask Doctor Grover – Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty can be performed on either the labia majora (outer lips) or the labia minora (inner lips).  This can help give a woman a more pleasing appearance and correct excess, redundant labia that can occur congenitally or worsen after childbirth.

Several different techniques exist.  I prefer to use a wedge technique on the labia minora (inner lips) as it gives a much more pleasing result than the amputation techniques.
